I remember my grandma telling me stories about how my grandfather would spend his days surrounded by his beloved pigeons and train them to become champions. When some news articles appeared about Chinese investors paying 1+ million euros to procure a single racing pigeon, the cute backyard sport changed identity. Somehow Belgium was the golden goose of pigeon sport investors. The project reflects the confusing amount of actors involved in the sport and our general relationship towards pigeons. The multimillion-euro pigeons and the ones we see trotting around in our cities are a single breed of rock pigeon, which further diversifies our already complex relationship with these animals.
The zine is the result of a world filled with hate and love for a single animal. It’s an eclectic collection of photographs, screenshots, timetables and archival material. It does not aim to clarify the complex nuances of our relationship with pigeons, it rather provides an overview of all these intersecting views and further confuses what is really happening.
